Dumpster Rental Hidden Fees: The $4,200 Overage Trap, Explained

Updated 2026-10-21. Prices are sourced ranges, checked against national cost data — your hauler's written quote is the number that counts. Get it in writing, with the included tons and overage rate on it.

The five fees that turn a $439 quote into a $4,000+ bill

FeeTypical rangeHow to avoid it
Overweight / overage$40–$200 per extra tonAsk the included tons in writing. Concrete, dirt, brick and wet roofing blow past limits fast — a 20-yard filled with concrete can weigh 4–5x its included tonnage.
Dry-run / trip fee$195–$350 per tripClear the drop spot, move cars, unlock gates. If the truck can't drop or pick up, you pay for the trip anyway.
Extra rental days$5–$50 per dayConfirm the included rental period (often 7–10 days) and the daily rate after it, before delivery.
Prohibited items$50–$500+ per itemTires, paint, batteries, appliances with refrigerant, and mattresses are common chargebacks. Ask for the list.
Overfill$75–$200Nothing above the fill line. Tarps don't make it legal to haul.
STOPThe pattern in the complaints: a low phone quote, no weight disclosure, then a large overage charge weeks later with no certified weight ticket. Fix: written quote + included tons + overage $/ton + ask for the weight ticket at pickup.

Three questions to ask every hauler

  1. What is the all-in price, and how many tons does it include?
  2. What is the overage rate per ton, and will you send me the certified weight ticket?
  3. Are you the hauler with your own trucks, or a broker booking someone else?
